Cognitive Tasks Overview & Failures

(Needs Documentation)

Timing Control

Trajectory Prediction

Rhythm Control

Tracking Capacity

Risk Tendencies

Angle Judgment

Motor Learning

Search Efficiency

  • Overview: A number of shapes will appear on the screen and you must quickly detect if the “orange triangle” is present by hitting the right button or not present by hitting the left button. Once a selection has been made, a new array of shapes will appear to search and detect again. The goal is to be as fast and accurate as possible.

Failures

How To Help

  • Being too inaccurate

  • Remind the person to slow down just a little bit in order to be more accurate but not too much.

Distraction Control

  • Overview: Five arrows will be presented in a line in the middle of the screen. The objective is to identify which direction the middle arrow is pointing as quickly and as accurately as possible. If the arrow is pointing to the left, hit the left bumper. If the arrow is pointing to the right, hit the right bumper. The arrows surrounding the center arrow may be pointing in the same or opposite direction, only focus on the center arrow.

Failures

How To Help

  • Responding too fast therefore making too many errors.

  • Remind the person to slow down just a little bit in order to be more accurate.

  • Responding too slowly.

  • Tell the person to try to speed up and to not worry about messing up or missing a couple.

  • Responding to the end of the arrow instead of where it is pointing (An arrow is pointing left but the person chooses right because that is where the end of the arrow is). Does not happen often.

  • Remind the person that they need to find a balance of speed and accuracy in order to be successful in this task the same as they do in the field or on the court. Be as fast and controlled as possible.

  • Responding to every arrow that is presented in the line instead of only the middle arrow. Does not happen often but some people will try to respond to every arrow when they appear.

  • Watch them do the practice round, see if you can notice anything off and then offer advice when the practice round is over.

Perception Speed

  • Overview: A small diamond will flash quickly in the middle of the screen with a corner of the diamond missing. The objective is to identify which corner was missing by hitting the up, left, right, or down button on the D-Pad (Xbox) or the keyboard (laptop).

Failures

How To Help

  • This task is nearly impossible to fail.

  • The person must respond in order to move to the next trial. If using a laptop and the keyboard is not working, they can use the mouse in order to respond.

Impulse Control

  • Overview: A blue or an orange ball will appear on the screen. If the ball is blue, hit the right bumper, if the ball is orange, hit the left bumper. The goal is to respond as quickly and accurately as possible.

Failures

How To Help

  • Responding too quickly therefore making too many mistakes.

  • Remind the person to slow down just a little bit in order to be more accurate.

  • Responding too slowly.

  • Tell the person to try to speed up and to not worry about messing up or missing a couple. Remind the person that they need to find a balance of speed and accuracy in order to be successful in this task the same as they do in the field or on the court. Be as fast and controlled as possible.

  • Not responding correctly, only responding when the blue ball is on the right side of the screen and the orange is on the left side (not common but has happened).

  • Watch them do the practice round, see if you can notice anything off and then offer advice when the practice round is over. If the person is really struggling, do a practice round for them to show them how to do it.

Instinctive Learning

  • Overview: One of three pictures will flash on the screen and the person will choose to either hit the right or the left button. Based on their choice, feedback will indicate that their choice was “correct” or “incorrect”. Based on this feedback, the person will continue to make the “best” choice. This task can be frustrating as the responses may produce different results. The goal is to trust their instincts and respond with the “best” choice regardless of the differing feedback.

Failures

How To Help

  • Not responding to the pictures. (rare)

  • Watch the person and make sure they are responding using the correct buttons. We get the most questions about this task because it doesn’t make sense to some people. Remind them of the following:

  • They are guessing at first for each picture by selecting to press the left or right button, based on the feedback, make the “best” choice for each picture.

  • Don’t get frustrated, just trust your instincts and go with your gut.

Reaction Control

  • Overview: A purple or yellow ball will be presented in the middle of the screen and will move either left or right. The person must respond based on the color of the ball. If the ball is yellow respond by choosing the button that indicates same the direction that the ball moves. If the yellow ball moves right, respond by pressing the right button; if the yellow ball moves left, respond by pressing the left button. If the ball is purple, respond by pressing the button that indicates the opposite direction that the ball moves. If the purple ball moves left, respond by pressing the right button; if the purple ball moves right, respond by pressing the left button. The goal is to respond as quickly and as accurately as possible.

Failures

Spatial Memory

  • Overview: 10 squares (5 blue, 5 orange) will appear on the screen for a short period of time and then will disappear. A grid will appear, the person must recall where the 5 blue squares would be on the grid by choosing the squares that they think they should be.

Failures

 Cannot Fail This Task

Stopping Control

  • Overview: A white ball will appear at the top of the screen in which it will drop down to the bottom. The goal is to hit the button to stop/catch the ball inside the white circle in the middle of the screen. However, if the ball turns red midflight, you must let the ball go and not hit the button to stop/catch it in the hallowed ball.

Failures

How To Help

  • Letting to many white balls fall to the bottom of the screen. The goal is to catch all the white balls in the circle and to only let the red ones go but, many people try to guess/cheat by not responding when the white one passes the circle thinking it will turn red. Despite the warning instructions that appears when they let too many go, people will still continue to let the white balls go which forces them to fail and have to redo the task.

  • Watch the practice round and see if they are either letting too many white balls go or having a hard time letting the red balls go. Remind them that after the practice of these two rules and to check for understanding.

  • Catching too many red balls. Sometimes it is very hard for the person to let the red ones go and they catch too many. This results in a failure.

  • If the person is really struggling, do a practice for them so they can see how to perform the task correctly.
